Many things have happend today, mostly due to U.S. politics. But barring from that I’ve made more Marketing IG reels and Twitter for Growrilla. Follow either @growrillaapp on IG or Twitter to see those videos.
First of all, Twitter (and other platforms) have silenced the 45th President of the United States. I usually don’t follow politics, but this is not about politics anymore. It is about the power of (private) companies.
I won’t go into it if it is was a valid decision to do that, cause I don’t follow politics. But the decision to ban Donald Trump is absurd considering he is one of the most powerful people in the world. This means that companies can de-platform ANYONE if they desire it even though you are the President of the U.S.
Some may say that this will be an exception. Well, I disagree wholeheartedly. The slippery-slope fallacy is true whether you like it or not. We have seen many times where moderators in subreddits, discord servers, YouTube videos, and more, abuse their powers before. Moderators didn’t like a specific person on THEIR platform? Well, they de-platform them even if they provide a valid value. You can find many examples, so I won’t name examples.
Imagine if the phone company provider is banning you from their services cause they didn’t like you as a person. Then other carriers are starting to ban you as well, cause the carrier’s manufactures and maintainers community don’t like you as well.
This is what is happening right now. Trump hasn’t done anything wrong on other social media platforms but is still getting banned from Amazon Twitch, Google, even Pinterest, and more. I mean what the fuck.
Whether you like it or not, Donald Trump still was chosen to be the 45th President of the United States. Chosen to be one of the most important people on the planet. Then (private) companies sit-around their tables and decide to de-platform the President of the United States!
What a joke.
I’m predicting right now that Twitter and other platforms will abuse this power even more. They have done it to the most powerful person in the U.S., why will they stop there? Cause of human decency? Nah that’s a fairy tale mate. Power will be abused at some point whether intentionally or not. That’s why people that have leverage over their employers ask for a high raise even though the company may be losing profit. If you are so decent, why won’t you choose to reduce your salary to keep the company up? Well because you have leverage (power) and you know your value.
Spotify will be starting to censor podcasters. Google will adjust its algorithm to make certain people harder to find. Twitter will be banning people with the same views of people they don’t like. Amazon Twitch will be banning streamers cause of their opinions. Who would be stopping them? The government? They already de-platformed the most powerful individual of the United States, so that’s already thrown out the window.
After this weekend, month, or even 2021, communities will be looking for decentralization options. (Not talking about Blockchain necessarily.) When the tech world’s abuse of power comes more prominent, communities will flee. They will build their own private Telegram groups, private Discord servers, private subreddits, private Mastodon Nodes, private Signal groups, or any other private method that exists. Why? Cause they didn’t fit with the perfect world the tech companies had in mind, so they left their country and established their own tribe.
I even think this is for the better, cause social media platforms are committing suicide. We are seeing the fall of digital Rome in our age.
